The F52 1er...
Based on the UKL2
platform, we get the 118i (136hp) and the 120i (192hp).
Now, what shocked me is that this 1er is made in China, and despite not having an FTA with China, this....thing.... is cheaper than the older F20 in the 118i guise... which is sold along side it.
I mean, by 500 dollars give or take, but what I wonder is... who, who knows about BMWs, wants this car? It’s basically a heavy less practical Mini Cooper, and the F20 is pretty much better at, erm, everything.
If you’re a true fan of speed, you’d want to buy the 120i and surprise, surprise! The 120i F20 is RWD, and cheaper than the F52 120i model...
If “they” want the Sedan style and don’t care about the FWD, well, still bad luck for BMW. The Audi A3 is a lot cheaper than either 1er, and trim by trim it has more power.
The saving grace for this car would be to adapt the Countryman’s hybrid drive system, turn up the wick on that motor, and get an AWD 250hp small sedan that could chase GTIs
At a much higher cost I suspect.

But is Mini a significantly worse badge? Or Audi for that matter?

Or don't want more powerful engines and possibly AWD.

Yes! Except the CLA is much prettier.

For those who can’t or won’t handle a base 3er lease.

It was a reference to an ad for the Cadillac Catera, although the car I was thinking of was actually the Cim arron.

Leases are shit here in Mexico, super high rates.
I honestly don't know who this is for in this market, in China I get it because of their wierd tax code.

Who wouldn’t want a tiny, piss yellow, FWD BMW 4 door “ coupe”?
Can I get it with a 3 cylinder engine and slush box transmission?
![]() 01/24/2019 at 20:54 |

You can only get it with an auto here... but you can get it with a 3cyl or a 4cyl

Oh.

I will do a lease with zero down payment on a stripped 3 cylinder.
All I really want is to be able to tell people I drive a BMW

If you pay 500 dollars more you can tell people you drive a RWD BMW and then you can shit on the people with the X1, X2,
the F52 and the ATs of the world.

Leases are the cash cow for premium makers in Murka, and I think have grown in Yourup too.
I suspect a Chinese-made BMW would hit the ground here with a huge thud, might not happen any time in the near future.

I’m all about the badge. Everything else is irrelevant.

But leases sort of make sense in the US if it’s for a premium car, you pay half the money, you’ve got a right to half of the car’s value... in the US consumers aren’t affected by leases as much because the second hand market is a lot stronger than here.
I've seen BMW try CPO here and it mostly fails miserably, most consumers would prefer to finance or buy an X3 than a used X5.

But the opportunities
You could be like “HUR DUR your 3cyl auto fwd car is less of a BMW than my 3cyl auto BMW CUS ITS RWD!"
![]() 01/24/2019 at 21:11 |

Yes, but the Catera was RWD unlike the Cimarron.

that’s a cool color

I mean, it’s for people who want a new BMW but can’t afford a new BMW. You can argue that this thing should be an embarrassment to the BMW brand, and no one should want to buy it, but it, but the person who does want it doesn’t care as long as they can be seen with the roundel on their hood (I guess technically it isn’t on the hood, but you know what I mean) .
![]() 01/24/2019 at 21:23 |

That’s kind of the issue I have with it. A brand councious person could pay 500 bucks more and get a proper RWD BMW or save a heck of a lot of money and get a more powerful A3, which is a lot prettier in my mind. So again, WHY? Specially those who spring for the 120i.
Granted, if I had 27k USD to burn on a car, I’d get a GTI or a Kia Niro (i know, different ends of the scale but whatever) either car is more luxurious and more powerful.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 21:23 |

Do cars depreciate swiftly there? I didn’t know that.
Reminds me of something, when I was a kid, my dad knew a guy who would buy common ~5 year old American sedans, and ship them down to Mexico to resell and double his money.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 21:23 |
|
No it’s not. It looks cheap, and screams “I can’t afford a C-Class”.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 21:29 |

Difference is “common”... common cars hold their value somewhat well
.
Luxury cars here depreciate
very
quickly, not only because consumers are distrustful, but because shitty roads, shitty gas, and maybe even shitty 1st owners take a huge toll on these sophisticated cars.
So if you were to buy the CPO X5, in your mind you’d be looking at thousands of dollars in fixing the suspension in six months, and the engine timing in nine, so on and so forth.
On the other hand, the new X3 won't give you any trouble for the first four years, and on the 5th you wont mind as much.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 21:30 |

Okay, then I'll get the A class.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 21:31 |

Some early
lease deals I’ve seen assume a 70% depreciation after four years.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 21:31 |

A brand conscious person probably doesn’t care at all about RWD, they just want to be seen in a BMW. Sure you could drive an Audi, but that’s a less premium brand. And they’d certainly never drive a Kia. I imagine in Mexico VW is not thought of as a premium brand as well (here in the US it has a slightly more positive image, due in no small part to the fact that every other European brand we get is a luxury or near luxury brand (except Fiat, but there aren’t many of those anyway)) .
Obviously that’s a silly way to be, but there’s no question people are like that.

I’ve seen some here with nearly that much residual after 3 years.
What you say about sketchy roads, iffy fuels , and maybe dumb owners makes sense though. Also maybe why those cars from the US might have fetched a premium.

it’s for posers who want to be seen in a new BMW

There are people who prefer FWD. M y parents believe firey death will occur within seconds in a RWD car in anything but bright sunshine and dry roads. They would absolutely buy this over a RWD one.

How about a manufacturer known for introducing safe
FWD cars
... ie Audi?
![]() 01/25/2019 at 09:36 |

FWD no care.
![]() 01/25/2019 at 10:23 |

My post made no mention of brand. I’m saying that there are people who do not want a RWD regardless of who makes it. Not sure how an Audi is more safe than a BMW, though. I’d say you’re doing it wrong if you are buying a FWD from either of those brands.
![]() 01/25/2019 at 10:36 |

Well, the F52 isn’t for the US or EU market... so I wouldn’t be surprised if safety wasn’t a primary focus.
Also, the other UKL2 car I could find, the Mini Clubman, scores a 4 star crash test, where the A3 gets a five star rating (as per the euroncap
